South Asian University Admission 2024 – Eligibility Criteria
Master’s Level Programmes
- MSc in Applied Mathematics: Bachelor’s degree in any subject and has studied at least 2 courses each of one-year duration or 4 courses each of one-semester duration in Mathematics from an Institution recognized by the government of any of the SAARC countries, with a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate or an equivalent grade.
- MSc in Computer Science: 12 years of schooling + a 3 or 4 year Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a relevant area with mathematics as a subject either at the Bachelor’s level or at the 10+2 (12th class) level from an institution recognized by the government of any of the SAARC countries, with a minimum of 55% marks in the aggregate or an equivalent grade. Candidates who have a 2-year Bachelor’s degree and have cleared the first year of the Master’s program are also eligible.
- MSc in Biotechnology: 12 years of schooling + a 3-year bachelor’s degree (BSc, B.Pharm, BVSc, B.E., B.Tech, MBBS, etc.) in any area of Biological Sciences/ Chemistry/ Agriculture and allied sciences; Veterinary and allied sciences/ Biotechnology/ Biochemical Technology from an institution recognized by the government of any of the SAARC countries, with a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate or an equivalent grade. Students who have not studied Biology at the Bachelor’s level must have studied and passed Biology as a subject at the 10+2 (12th class) level. Candidates who have a 4-year bachelor’s degree or 3 years Bachelor’s degree and have cleared the first year of the Master’s program are also eligible.
- MA in Economics: 12 years of schooling + a 3 year Bachelor’s degree with mathematics as a subject of study at the 10+2 (12th class) level or at the Bachelor’s level or both from an institution recognized by the government of any of the SAARC countries, with a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate or an equivalent grade. Candidates who have a 4 year Bachelor’s degree or 2 years Bachelor’s degree and have cleared the first year of the Master’s program are also eligible.
- Since a sound knowledge of economics at the undergraduate level is necessary to cope with the Master’s program, the Entrance Test will feature questions on undergraduate-level economics, mathematics, and statistics.
- MA in International Relations: 2 years of schooling + a 3-year Bachelor’s degree from an institution recognized by the government of any of the SAARC countries, with a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate or an equivalent grade. Candidates who have a 4-year Bachelor’s degree or 2 years Bachelor’s degree and have cleared the first year of the Master’s program are also eligible.
- MA in Sociology: 12 years of schooling + a 3-year Bachelor’s degree from an institution recognized by the government of any of the SAARC countries in any discipline, with a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate or an equivalent grade. Candidates who have a 4 year Bachelor’s degree or 2 years Bachelor’s degree and have cleared the first year of the Master’s program are also eligible.
- LLM (Master of Laws): 12 years of schooling + a 5-year integrated BA/ BBA/ BSc/ LLB degree or 12 years of schooling + a 2 or 3 year Bachelor’s degree + a 3-year LLB degree or 12 years of schooling + a 4 year LLB degree from an institution recognized by the government of any of the SAARC countries, with a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate or an equivalent grade.
Ph.D. Programs
- Ph.D. in Mathematics: A minimum of 17 years of education with a Master’s degree in Mathematics/ Computer Science/Statistics/ Operations Research/ Physics or an equivalent degree with 55% marks in the aggregate or equivalent grade.
- Ph.D. in Computer Science: minimum of 17 years of regular education (12 years of regular schooling + a 3-year Bachelor’s degree and a 2-year Master’s degree or 4-year Bachelor’s degree + a 1 year Master’s degree in Computer Science or allied disciplines) from an institution recognized by the government of any of the SAARC countries, with a minimum of 55% marks or an equivalent grade. Applicants with 12 years of regular schooling + an integrated Bachelor’s and Master’s degree of at least 5 years duration are also eligible.
- Ph.D. in Biotechnology:12 years of schooling + a 3 or 4 year Bachelor’s degree + a 2-year post-graduate MSc, M.Pharm, M.V.Sc, M.E., or M.Tech degree in any branch of the Biological Sciences or an MD/MS/MSc from an institution recognized by the government of any of the SAARC countries, with a minimum of 55% marks or an equivalent grade.
- Ph.D. in Economics: A minimum of 17 years of education (12 years of schooling + a 3-year Bachelors’s degree and a 2-year Master’s degree or 4-year Bachelors’s degree + a 1 year Masters degree leading to a MA/ M.Sc. degree in Economics or related specializations) from an institution recognized by the government of any of the SAARC countries, with a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate or an equivalent grade.
- Ph.D. in International Relations: The minimum eligibility criteria to apply is as follows: 17 years of regular education (12 years of regular schooling + a 3-year Bachelor’s degree and a 2-year Master’s degree, or, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree + a 1-year Master’s degree.
- The candidate’s Master’s degree should be in International Relations or related disciplines like Political Science, Economics, Psychology, Anthropology, Sociology, History, Philosophy, Geography, Law, Development Studies, Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, Post-Colonial Studies, Comparative Literature, and Comparative Religious Studies, from an institution, recognized by the government of any of the SAARC countries, with a minimum of 50% marks, or an equivalent grade.
- Ph.D. in Sociology: A minimum of 17 years of education (12 years of schooling + a 3-year Bachelor’s degree and a 2-year Masters’s degree or 4-year bachelor’s degree + a 1 year Masters’s degree in Sociology or related disciplines like Political Science, Economics, and Business Studies, Labour Studies, Psychology, Cultural and Social Anthropology, History, Philosophy, Linguistics, Mass Communication, Journalism, Film and Television Studies, Education, Geography, Law, Social Work, Development Studies, Criminology, Archaeology, Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, Post-Colonial Studies, English, Comparative Literature, Comparative Religious Studies or Sociology of Science, Art History, Critical Theatre Studies, Aesthetics and art Production from an institution recognized by the government of any of the SAARC countries, with a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate or an equivalent grade.
- Ph.D. in Legal Studies: 12 years of schooling + a 5-year integrated BA/ BBA/ BSc/ LLB program or 4-year law degree or a 2 or 3-year Bachelors degree followed by a 3 year LLB program + a 2-year/1 year LLM program from an institution recognized by the government of any of the SAARC countries, with a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate or an equivalent grade.
- Those who have an LLB degree followed by a one-year LLM degree must have a minimum of 60% marks to be eligible to apply.

SAU Entrance Exam Pattern 2024
Master’s Level Programmes
MSc in Applied Mathematics
- The duration of the Entrance Test will be 2 hours and the question paper will consist of 50 multiple-choice questions.
- If the answer given to any of the Multiple Choice Questions is wrong, 1/4th of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted.
MSc in Computer Science
The duration of the Entrance Test will be 2 hours and the question paper will consist of 80 multiple-choice questions divided into two parts.
- PART A: will have 20 multiple choice questions of two marks each from the following areas of Mathematical Science
- PART B: will have 60 multiple choice questions of one mark each from the following areas of undergraduate level Computer Science
- If the answer given to any of the Multiple Choice Questions is wrong, ¼ of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted.
MSc in Biotechnology
The computer-based entrance test will be 2 hours in duration, and the question paper will have multiple-choice questions in two parts.
- Part A will consist of 30 questions carrying one mark each and will have 10+2 level questions from Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics. Candidates will be expected to attempt all questions from Part A.
- Part B will consist of 100 questions, out of which 70 questions need to be answered. Each question will carry one mark and will have undergraduate-level questions from Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Animal Sciences, Plant Sciences, Genetics, Microbiology, Biophysics, and Biostatistics. If more than 70 questions are answered, the first 70 will be considered for evaluation.
MA in Economics
- The duration of the Entrance Test will be 2 hours and the question paper will consist of 40 multiple-choice questions. Questions will cover the areas of microeconomics, macroeconomics, development economics, mathematics, and statistics, respectively.
- If the answer given to any of the Multiple Choice Questions is wrong, ¼ of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted.
MA in International Relations
Eligible candidates have to appear for an Entrance Test which will be of two hours duration. The question paper will consist of multiple-choice questions that will test the applicant’s understanding of the subject area and his or her general awareness of South Asia and the world.
MA in Sociology
- The duration of the Entrance Test will be 2 hours, and the question paper will consist of two sections: Section 1 will have 26 multiple-choice questions of one mark each that will test the applicant’s subject knowledge at the undergraduate level and his/her general knowledge pertaining to South Asia and the world.
- Section 2 will require students to answer a set of multiple-choice questions based on the reading of a passage provided. This will carry 24 marks. All questions are compulsory.
LLM (Master of Laws)
The duration of the Entrance Test will be 2 hours and the question paper will consist of 100 multiple-choice questions in two parts.
- Part A will have 20 multiple-choice questions of one mark each on general knowledge, political science, geography, general science, and civics of the 10+2 level.
- Part B will have 80 multiple choice questions of the LLB level carrying one mark each and will generally include the following areas Law
- If the answer given to any of the Multiple Choice Questions is wrong, 1/4th of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted.
Ph.D. programs
Ph.D. in Mathematics
- The duration of the Entrance Test will be 2 hours and the question paper will consist of 50 multiple-choice questions
- If the answer given to any of the Multiple Choice Questions is wrong, 1/4th of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted.
Ph.D. in Computer Science
The duration of the Entrance Test will be 2 hours and the question paper will consist of 70 multiple-choice questions in two parts, Part A and Part B.
- PART A: will have 25 multiple choice questions of one mark each and will test the knowledge of the candidate in Mathematics.
- Part B: will have 45 multiple-choice questions of one mark each and will test the knowledge of the candidate in Computer Science.
- If the answer given to any of the Multiple Choice Questions is wrong, ¼ of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted.
Ph.D. in Biotechnology
The computer-based entrance test will be of 2 hours duration. Questions will be asked at the MSc level from all the areas of Biological Sciences including Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Cancer Biology, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Animal Sciences, Plant Biotechnology, Genetics, Microbiology, Virology, Neurosciences, Biochemical Engineering, Biophysics, and Biostatistics.
- Part A will have 70 multiple-choice questions out of which 50 questions need to be answered. Each question carries one mark. If more than 50 questions are answered, the first 50 will be considered for evaluation.
- Part B will consist of 30 questions out of which 20 questions need to be answered. Each question will carry one mark. If more than 20 questions are answered, the first 20 will be considered for evaluation.
Ph.D. in Economics
Phase 1
- The duration of the Entrance Test is 2 hours and it will contain 40 multiple-choice questions. Questions will cover the areas of Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Mathematical Methods, Statistical & Econometric Methods, and Development Economics.
- If the answer given to any of the Multiple Choice Questions is wrong, ¼ of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted.
Phase 2
Research Proposal: Shortlisted candidates on the basis of their performance in the Entrance Test will be asked to submit a short research proposal of not more than 1500 words clearly indicating a research problem along with the methodology they propose to employ. In this respect, candidates are advised to refer to the research interests of individual faculty members to identify the broad research expertise available in the faculty.
